ARCH ENEMY Interview w/ Christopher Amott

Date: January 27th, 2010
Band Member Interviewed: Christopher Amott - Guitars
Interviewed By: Jacob Laginski

XM: So how are you doing today?
Chris: I'm doing good. It's a pretty busy day today, a lot of press. Yeah, a lot of press. Lots of interviews, just did an interview with VH1... Some VH1 people for some show.

XM: First off, is there any question that gets annoying to have to answer over and over again?
Chris: Yeah. *Laughs* Like, what's it like playing with your brother in the same band...Stuff like that. Why did I leave the band? Cause' I took a break... I get asked that a lot of times. Yeah.

XM: What's been the most uncomfortable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
Chris: Uncomfortable...No one has really come up with an uncomfortable question...I'd just say next question, I don't want to answer it. Kind of boring question.

XM: Almost reaching the three-month mark of your latest release "The Root of All Evil", How are people liking the new versions of the songs?
Chris: Good. Almost exclusively good reviews. It did well better than we thought, the album.

XM: How was the recording different from the original recording sessions?
Chris: Well, we did it in a studio close to home, in Halmstad, Sweden. We didn't have to rehearse or write any music, so it was different that way. But it was fun. It was a way of bringing back the old albums, with our old singer. We get  a lot of requests playing those old songs. Of course, that would lead a lot of the people out of it, cause' they have gotten into the band when Angela joined. So, they didn't recognize the old material. It was like a lot of that stuff was lost, so we wanted to bring those songs back.

XM: And looking back to when the band first started, whats one thing that still blows your mind and is there anything you'd have done differently?

Chris: Differently...Hmmm...Well, now I have experience. There's a lot of little things that I would do differently. Stuff that I've said interviews, but nothing really big like a big mistake. Still blows my mind to... Well, just having when the crowd is really good, and the way you write your riffs. You do it in your house then you go out and play it and people are singing along. In Mexico. It's kind of mind blowing, but I try not to be too jaded.

XM: And having just played a few US shows, do you notice a difference between your Canadian and American fans?
Chris:  Yeah! I mean, Canada has always been really, really good for us. I don't know why. You guys like your metal, you know? I think Americans are more trendy, more trend-orientated. Yeah, its like really great. We have these strongholds like Japan and Canada. Its really awesome, we're always waiting to get to Canada because we know the shows will be really awesome. That's the truth!

XM: Exactly one week ago you kicked off the Tyrants of Evil; North American Tour 2010. How has it been treating you so far?
Chris: Good. I'm staying healthy, I'm not sick. I usually get a cold on tour. *Laughs* I thought it would be a lot colder in Canada, I mean like snow and stuff.
XM: Yeah, we have had some weird weather here lately.
Chris: Yeah. But its really great. Exodus has been an exceptional band, and its cool to have them with us. So everything is going pretty good. When we played the big show in New York that went good.

XM: So what have been the memorable highlights? New York?
Chris: New York, yeah...That was kind of stressful though. It's always stressful in the big cities, though. It's just the whole vibe is very...There's always lots of guests and record people coming out. The whole vibe of the big cities is very stressful. Highlights? I don't know, we haven't even done half. The Canadian shows we did yesterday and the day before were really good. Hopefully tonight will be to. They we're both sold out.

XM: And, after this you guys are off to Europe for allot of shows and festivals.
Chris: Yep.
XM: Any in particular that you're looking forward to? Why?
Chris: Haven't really checked them out, what kind of festivals they are. So... No. I mean am looking forward to them but there is nothing in particular. When you do these festivals you just go out and play you don't really have time to look at other bands or anything...

XM: After you finish up this set of tours, what are you planing on doing?
Chris: We're writing. We're writing material, all the time. Bits and pieces. We have a lot of time off this year, so we will be rehearsing, recording demos. Maybe new album, at the end of this year.

XM: If you could have been involved in the writing, recording, or production of any album wich would it be and why?
Chris: *Long pause*... Maybe uh... Something by The Who? I'm a big fan of The Who.  Seems pretty crazy, see what they're like. I don't know. I can't answer that. I don't have a favorite album.

XM: If you had to describe Arch Enemy's Music in three words they would be...
Chris: Intense... Three words eh? I don't know. How bout that!? I, Don't, Know. *Laughs* It's... Kind of soulful. *Giggles*  It's Intense, it's Heavy, it's Aggressive.

XM: Did you ever have an arch enemy growing up?
Chris: No, no...Well, my brother. *Laughs*

XM: Just coming into 2010, how would you say metal has evolved over the past decade?
Chris: Metal has evolved? Well.. It's become more... People buy less records. Go on the internet. But I guess that's for all music. Well, there is a lot of new metal genre's. Like Nu-Metal, and stuff like that. But it kind of stays the same I think. Maybe it's more to down-tuned guitars and triggered drums. It's changed in a technical way, but it's still the same.

XM: What was the last CD you bought?
Chris: Yeah, what was that?... I download, I buy stuff on iTunes. I actually can't remember. I think it was something by the band...I don't remember. Go on.

XM: That's it, actually. Thank you very much for the interview! Any final words that you want to get out there?
Chris: Looking forward to playing tonight, in Canada. Hope you can come out and see us at any of the shows on this tour.
